Blakfish - See You In Another City EP

Format: Album
Release Date: 4th Aug 2008
Label: Big Scary Monsters
Rating:

To be fair any band linked to Big Scary Monsters are where it’s at right now. It’s a fact, like Amy Winehouse likes a cheeky high now and then. And Blakfish are no exception.

The obvious favourite track on ‘See You In Another City’ has got to be ’Jeremy Kyle Is A Marked Man’ and not for the name alone. Calling this a blinding pop-rock number would be a bit of an insult as it‘s a lot more intense and just plain harder than that. It’s blissful vocal and guitar harmonies are mirrored by perfected drum skills and it eagerly changes pace so cleverly that not one beat, note or scream is left unnoticed.

The rest of the EP is pretty much hardcore madness with a touch of punk and even a saucy bit of indie now and then. You can imagine the carnage they’d provoke live. ‘Make Your Bed And Lie In It’ is a perfect example of their diverse approach to music-making. It’s like you’ve grabbed all the best bits of Biffy, added sore-throat inducing vocals and harsher but beautifully melodic riffs and still kept all the fun of it. You’re gonna need to give your ears a rest after this one.

‘See You In Another City’ is short at just five tracks. It kinda leaves you wanting more, which is by no means a bad thing. The Brummie lads have given us an exhilarating aural treat in this EP and a challenge. A challenge to give this band the recognition they deserve after being together for almost a decade. Now that’s dedication for you.
