Weezer - Pork & Beans

Format: Single
Release Date: 24th Apr 2008
Label: Geffen
Rating:

This is the first single to be released from Weezer's forthcoming self titled album (their third self titled album) which is nicknamed "The Red Album". "Pork & Beans" is a self referencial and ironic song inspired by Geffen asking them to take on a more commercial sound. The lyrics of this song are about making a chart topping hit, as Cuomo cheekily sings "Everyone likes to dance to a happy song/ With a catchy chorus and a beat so they can sing along/ Timberland knows the way to reach the top of the chart/ Maybe if I work with him I can perfect the art". Timberland's response to these lyrics is not yet known.

Musically I am afraid to say this is a painfully average Weezer song. It is one of their typical power pop rocking songs that doesn't really have an exciting lead riff and there is no cool solo to be found like in most of their songs. Lyrically this is as cheeky, charming and humourous as you would expect, but some may find the lyrics a little cringworthy here.

Personally, I can't really see this song going on to become one of their most memorable tunes. Hopefully this song will not be representitive of the whole album, but those of you hoping for another "Blue Album" or "Pinkerton" may have to hold your breath a while longer.
