 Out From Animals
The Rock n Roll/Electronica 3 piece have an unused A level in Art and a worrying DVD collection... apparently.
What motivates you to make music?
It seems like I spend every minute of the day with parts of a tune or a melody buzzing around my head. Making music is just the natural result of this.
What three aspects or parts of your latest release (single or album) are you most proud of?
Well I’m just glad I actually got the song finished. The National Curriculum was the song that took me over a year to write. I had the main chorus in my head then I sorted the opening guitar riff but the rest of it took ages. I kept writing the song then scrapping the whole thing because it never turned out as good as it sounded in my head. One day I had a breakthrough by time-stretching some sounds and the rest just fell into place. Other than that I’m quite happy with the lyrics because I think I got the point across without ruining the flow.
If time and money were no issue, how long do you think it would take you to make the perfect album?
Well if the single is anything to go by then 12 years! Really it takes me about a week to write a song. A lot of our sound comes from messing around with recorded sounds and playing around on midi programs so that can be time consuming. It’s more a case of it’ll take a week to write because of all the fine tuning in the production stages of the sounds.
What do you enjoy doing away from music?
There’s not much we do away from music to be honest. We all like going to remote places with a few friends but even then we listen to music. We spend a lot of time at shows and at free party gatherings listening to music. Sean has just started a drama course though which sounds interesting! Paul’s been getting into website design; he just did ours from scratch. I’m a big film buff and my DVD collection is a bit of a worry.
Which song or piece of music other than your own draws the strongest emotional response from you?
The soundtrack to Little Shop of Horrors.
Outside of recording and playing music, which part of the musician’s life do you find the most dull?
Anyone who’s in a band has to get used to waiting around at gigs. The worst thing is when soundchecks take longer than shows or all-dayers where you’re told to get there at 3 and have to wait around all day till you play sometime near 11.
Which instrument do you wish you could play and why?
I wish I could read music instead of just playing my guitar by ear. That and the cello and/or trombone. I try to play piano too but that’s also an instrument you probably need to know how to read music to play properly.
Apart from music are there any other art forms you relate to?
I’m a painter, I prefer to work with acrylics. That A in art A-level hasn’t had much chance to be put to use since I left school though apart from band artwork. My older sister’s a professional ballet dancer in Germany and my mum’s a dance teacher so I defiantly appreciate dance as an art form.
What role do you believe music plays in the world and how do you help to fulfill it?
Without music how else would Audrey 2 let you know he’s a mean green mother from outer space
With the rise of the internet fans are able to become closer to and know more about their artists. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
I think you only have to look at things like radio one; when I can listen to the radio at primetime and know that now chances are there will be a couple of alright tunes. This is because things like the internet and all the music channels on digital TV have given people the chance to decide for themselves and bring previously underground bands out into the spotlight.
How do you think music will be distributed, exchanged or sold in 5 years time?
It might not be in 5 years but eventually we won’t have CDs as a format, meaning that albums will be obsolete. We’ll still have some sort of physical product but bands will release mini-albums and eps more regularly instead of waiting for two years for 12 tracks.
If you could rename your band, what would it be?
The name I had the other day was ‘Wasps and Bees’ but I was told that’s worse than what we have now.
Looking back on the last century, which decade had the best music?
I think all the soul music in the 60’s. I’m fascinated by the production techniques producers used on those old recordings. People like Mark Ronson are doing a great job of recreating the sound.
In 10 years time, what will you be doing?
Just let me worry about what I’m doing for the next year or so first.
Please leave us with your favourite lyric, line of poetry, quote or phrase.
“You got your mind made up about how everything works. How you gonna learn anything new when you KNOW everything already?” – Willie Brown, Crossroads (1986)
