Drive-by Argument

Saxophones, Beatle-mania and calling the band'Pink Zebras' are all expalined in 15 short answers from Drive-by Argument's lead singer

What motivates you to make music?
Lot’s of things, it’s a passion. I write music to express how I feel about something, and hopefully to mean something to other people.

What three aspects or parts of your latest release (single or album) are you most proud of?
That’s pretty tricky, I’m proud of it as a whole. I’m pleased with the tracks on the album, because I think it gives people a good idea of what we’re all about. The production also holds a bit of energy, which was really important to us. We wanted to get across as much of the live aspect of the band as we could. And the fact that we did the artwork ourselves makes it a bit more special.

If time and money were no issue, how long do you think it would take you to make the perfect album?
I don’t think it would ever end. Sometimes you need to just let things go, you could drive yourself mad trying to get every little thing perfect, and sometimes what makes songs is the imperfections.

What do you enjoy doing away from music?
Music is such a massive part of our lives it’s hard to do anything else. I’m a bit of a geek in my own time, I spend most of my time playing computer games and reading books.

Which song or piece of music other than your own draws the strongest emotional response from you?
There are a lot, I like to get emotionally involved with songs. First Day of my Life by Bright Eyes, Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap, Believe by Elton John, Benedictus by Karl Jenkins, and Ran for Miles by Gemma Hayes are all favourites. Failing that, anything by Scouting For Girls is good if I want to feel outraged and nauseous.

Outside of recording and playing music, which part of the musician’s life do you find the most dull?
Nothing really, being in the studio is the only thing that can get a bit grating, everything else is usually a good laugh. Long drives between gigs when you’re on the road can be a bit of a pain, but generally, being a musician is anything but dull.

Which instrument do you wish you could play and why?
The Cello, because I love the sound of strings, the Saxophone, because there is nothing cooler than Sax, and the Drums, because I imagine I would look really cool.

Apart from music are there any other art forms you relate to?
I’ve always been really into art. Growing up creativity was always a big part of my family, so we’d always be painting or whatever. I really love the Impressionist style. Other than that, I’m a big fan of films!

What role do you believe music plays in the world and how do you help to fulfill it?
We’re getting deep now eh? Music helps everyone in one-way or another. It helps people to get through difficult times, to empathise with others, to feel better about themselves, or just to cheer them up. It’s transcends languages, or race, or class. Everyone has a song or a piece of music that reminds them of certain times in their lives. Hopefully some of my music might mean something to someone. If it does then it’s all worth while.

With the rise of the internet fans are able to become closer to and know more about their artists. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
Positive, definitely. I think it means that people can understand artists a bit better, see where they are coming from, and realize that they’re just normal human beings like everyone else. Obviously that means that idolising musicians to the level that used to happen is dead, we’ll never see another Beatle-mania or anything like that ever again, which is a shame, but it also means that hopefully we’ll never see another Gary Glitter either.

How do you think music will be distributed, exchanged or sold in 5 years time?
Who cares, it’ll still happen. There will always be a place for it. Of course everyone assumes that everything is going to go digital, but there will always be a place for live music and I think it would be stupid to discount people wanting an actual physical product as well.

If you could rename your band, what would it be?
Probably anything but ‘Drive-By Argument’ that’s for sure! Except for ‘Pink Zebra’, which was another contender when we formed. I say contender… we laughed at it.

Looking back on the last century, which decade had the best music?
We argue about this a lot. In my opinion it would have to be the 80’s, but I’m a sucker for a synth hook and some catchy pop melodies!

In 10 years time, what will you be doing?
Hopefully still doing music in some shape or form. Maybe soundtracks for silent movies. Silent movies are coming back, you heard it here first.

Please leave us with your favourite lyric, line of poetry, quote or phrase.
“No sun was up today, but we didn't mind. Too busy making the rain shine” Gemma Hayes.

Drive-by Argument release their debut self titled album on May 12 through Lizard King Records.
