 Galactic
New Orleans Funk Group answer our questions
What motivates you to make music?
I grew up loving to hear music and that makes me want to make music—keep the growth alive!
What three aspects or parts of your latest release (single or album) are you most proud of?
The songwriting, that we took a chance, and my personal bass lines. I feel like I got to really compose bass lines on this album more than I ever have.
If time and money were no issue, how long do you think it would take you to make the perfect album?
3 months with nothing else to do—no touring, no house work, no wife.
What do you enjoy doing away from music?
I love to eat, hang out around the house (we are on tour so much that being around the house is a luxury), travel with my wife, photography.
Which song or piece of music other than your own draws the strongest emotional response from you?
Many song do, one recently that I listened to was Public Enemy’s “when I get to Arizona”
Outside of recording and playing music, which part of the musician’s life do you find the most dull?
Driving from city to city—I do not like to be in a vehicle for too long.
Which instrument do you wish you could play and why?
Piano, because I would love be able to entertain a room full of people with just a piano.
Apart from music are there any other art forms you relate to?
Photography, graphic design, glass blowing, sculpture
What role do you believe music plays in the world and how do you help to fulfill it?
It brings feelings to people in a different way than talking or watching can bring.
With the rise of the internet fans are able to become closer to and know more about their artists. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?
I think it is a positive response. I think that people want to know more about bands and IF the band wants to let people in they can, if they don’t , they don’t have to.
How do you think music will be distributed, exchanged or sold in 5 years time?
Pretty much purely through the internet. Cd stores will become like the vinyl stores of today
If you could rename your band, what would it be?
That is a very tough question—maybe, ROBERT MERCURIO and those other guys
Looking back on the last century, which decade had the best music?
70’s
In 10 years time, what will you be doing?
Hopefully still doing this—touring, making music and traveling the worlds with my best friends.
Please leave us with your favourite lyric, line of poetry, quote or phrase.
Eleanor Roosevelt: “Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual, you have an obligation to be one.”
New Orleans futuristic jazz funk outfit launch their new album “From The Corner To The Block “
Galactic was born in the early '90s, after two Washington DC punks – guitarist Jeff Raines and bassist Robert Mercurio – relocated to New Orleans and found themselves intoxicated by the sounds of the scene that nurtured The Meters, Professor Longhair, the Neville Brothers and Dr. John.
The New Orleans-based frontrunners of futuristic funk have now signed to the Anti- imprint. “From The Corner To The Block”, which was co-produced by the band’s saxophonist Ben Ellman, is out this March and includes guest appearances from an array of today’s most innovative MC’s, including Jurassic 5’s Chali 2na, Quannum’s Lyrics Born, Gift Of The Gab & Lateef the Truth Speaker, Ubiquity’s Ohmega Watts, Mr Lif, The Coup’s Boots Riley, Digable Planets’ Ladybug Mecca, Juvenile and more.
