Go Audio

Pop punkers Go:Audio

Hi Go:Audio, please introduce yourselves and give us a quick history of the band.
James: There’s myself, Andy, Josh and Zack. We’ve been together for about 4-5 years I met Josh about 5 years ago through a friend, and we starting writing songs together. Then we got Josh’s brother Zack to play guitar and we started playing local gigs with Josh’s Mac onstage for electronic drums and bass. We wanted to progress from there so we got Andy on board so we’ve been playing gigs and then got signed!

The new e.p. ‘Woodchuck’ contains live, studio and remixed recordings of your songs. On which do you think you sound best and why?
J: The Secret Handshake remix of our track ‘Doesn’t Really Matter’ is awesome coz it’s a different take on the song, a good twist. Andy: I think they all sound good! We don’t really have a specific one. J: ‘Forget About It’ is probable my personal favourite.

Where do you draw your musical inspiration from, what makes you play this style of music?
J: Mainly American bands, although anything really. Josh’s influences are quite varied as he plays the violin and like Nigel Kennedy, he’s also really into quirky things like Imogen Heap, and also the Eels, so quite quirky. I like Something Corporate, New Found Glory, All American Rejects, that kind of thing. A: I’m into everything!

How is the synth/electronic instrumentation built into your songwriting process? What do you think it adds to your overall sound?
J: It’s a main part of our sound, we wanted to be different and we found that was a way to make us different – we don’t have a bass player so it adds that way. We like the sound of them.

James’ vocals seem to have an “American” accent to them, is this intentional?
J: I wasn’t aware I did! Maybe its because of our influences – the way you sing is not how you talk – otherwise you’d have a whole loads of songs with a Birmingham accent! Although I still personally don’t think I sound American… A: If you’re into American bands it’s quite likely it’ll show through a bit – The Arctic Monkeys accent is really apparent as it’s their style of music – but we play a completely different style of music.

The bands rise to fame has been very quick, what was the catalyst for this?
J: We’re in a really privileged position to be signed, but I don’t think we’ve shot to fame just yet! A: I don’t think we’re too famous yet, we’re still working our way up, there’s a lot of work to do yet!

Which instrument would you like to learn to play?
J: Drums A: Piano

Of the bands you have been out on the road with, which has impressed you most?
J: The Blackout. They were really nice, and they’ve got such a hardcore following. It’s refreshing to see bands who are selling out venues and still being nice. Some bands who are more well know can be not-so-nice.

Your MySpace seems to be very popular, what are the positives and negatives of your strong online presence?
A: Josh and Zack are always on there. We always make a conscious effort to reply to everybody, and fans really appreciate that. It’s hard sometimes to keep on top of it. You’re on the road so much and internet access is scarce, you end up with pages of people to reply to.

How do you think your music will be sold/distributed/exchanged in 5 years time?
A: I reckon it’ll be all online - CDs are already dying out. And maybe vinyl, they seem to be coming back. Collector’s items and all that. J: Yeah I think things are really going digitally based. And Camden market has a good selection of vinyl – well it did before it burnt down!

Which song or piece of music other than your own draws the strongest emotional response from you?
J: I’ve recently got into Sigor Ros. I could sit there and listen to that all day.

What do you enjoy doing away from music?
Both: Watching football A: Going to the pub J : Drinking apple sourz and falling down stairs!

If time and money were no issue, how long do you think it would take you to make the perfect album?
J: It’s like a painting – you can keep adding to it, but it gets to a point where you need to just get it out there. It would be a never ending album, you’d always want to add more to it. Sometimes that’s not the case though - when we wrote ‘Made Up Stories’ it happened really quickly – sometimes the best things happen naturally and quickly.

Where do you see the band in 10 years time?
J: Making a living out of music A: Selling out venues J: Headlining tours A: Hopefully still alive!

When is the new record out?
The Woodchuck EP is out on 3rd March.
